Turmoil for Freedom: 500 Years of the German Peasants' War

When the German Peasants' War Set the Nation Ablaze

Inspired by the writings of the Reformation, peasants across Germany rose up in 1525. They rebelled against excessive taxes and their status as serfs, among other grievances. Five hundred years later, numerous events and special exhibitions commemorate the bloody days of this first German freedom movement.

One of the centers of the peasant revolt against the nobility was Rothenburg ob der Tauber. In 2025, the events of that time will come alive there through various formats: the mobile event series “Uffrur! …on the road” (June 28, 2025), an Italian opera night (July 11, 2025), or the Imperial City Festival (September 5–7, 2025).

In 1525, the situation was particularly tense in the prince-bishop’s residence city of Würzburg. Fortress Marienberg, which played a significant role during the revolt, will host the “Museum für Franken” exhibition “1525 – Franconia Demands Freedom(s)” from April 11 to October 26, 2025. Selected artifacts will highlight the motives and demands of the insurgents. A second Würzburg exhibition, titled “Peasants! Protest, Turmoil, Justice”, will run at the Museum im Kulturspeicher from April 12 to August 3, 2025, spanning artistic depictions of the Peasants' War from the 19th century to the present.

200 Years of Jean Paul

The First Professional Writer

Born in 1763 in Franconia, the writer was one of the most widely read authors of his time and is considered the first professional writer in Germany.

To mark the 200th anniversary of his death, the places connected to his Franconian legacy are honoring him. From March to November 2025, Bayreuth will host readings, exhibitions, and concerts. In his birthplace, Wunsiedel, the play “Hoppelpoppel or Jean Paul’s Magic Land” will premiere at the Luisenburg Festival on August 15, 2025. Earlier in the year, from March 21 to 23, 2025, the “Jean Paul Birthday Weekend” will take place. Throughout the year, “Jean Paul in Small Doses” will guide visitors to important places from his childhood and provide insights into the role of local cuisine in his life and work. This will also be served as an exclusive Jean Paul menu at the Luisenburg Resort.

In Coburg, a special exhibition by the Coburg State Library will be displayed in autumn 2025 to celebrate the occasion.

For those wishing to follow in the poet’s footsteps, the “Jean Paul Trail” offers a scenic journey, connecting key locations of his life between Joditz and Sanspareil.
